Many questions surround the origins of our Basan family,
although the stories handed down through various branches all say a definite
'Spain'.
Facts we know for certain are
that George Basan married Mary Folwell in 1828 in England and Georges parents
were Jacob Basan and Judith Reitti, George also had two sisters we know about,
they being Elizabeth, who we believe stayed in England, and Sarah who also made
he way to Australia.
Stories also within the family
are that the Basans were diamond merchants in either England or prior to that.
Chancery records (Dormant Funds) from England filed in 1904 state that Georges
(possibly eldest son) Alphonse was first to depart for Australia, with Parents
George and Mary and their children following a little later, but after their
arrival in Melbourne on the "Asia" on 27th March 1850 they could never
locate him, Advertisements were posted world-wide for information about his
whereabouts, but nobody replied, George returned to England three times but
could never find his lost son 'Alphonse'.
My GG Grandfather Conrad Basan
departed Melbourne on 28 March 1870, a passenger on the "Rangitoto"
bound for Port Chalmers, Dunedin, New Zealand. He was listed as 27 years old , a
single male, occupation, Miner, we believe he was the only family member of that
generation to leave Australia, and while we are uncertain as to why he would
venture to New Zealand, rumours are that he was a 'Remittance Man', however he
seems to have made good in his newly adopted land and raised a large and
colourful family.
