My Pioneering Sutton Family starts with Oliver Sutton, whom with his wife Sarah, sailed to Adelaide, South Australia (SA), we think in the 1840's. I am still unable to locate their shipping details, South Australian records are abysmal - that is, it seems that way when researching from Western Australia. When in SA, they seemed to move about a bit, Oliver was a carpenter, so maybe his occupation necessitated a roving lifestyle, however, when their fifth child (Sarah - my GGGrandmother) was born in 1853, the family were living in Victoria and a year later boarded the 'Clutha' bound for Dunedin, New Zealand arriving on 18 Aug 1854.
Oliver seemed to be a entrepreneur of sorts acquiring a lot of land and being involved in importing cattle from Australia etc, his untimely death was a result of a night spent in the bush on his way home from a business trip at Waikouaiti, when he seems to have lost his way 'in the Mist of Flagstaff' and died a short time later through 'Inflammation of the Lungs'. Oliver could well have been a business associate/acquaintance of Sir James Macandrew, and also involved in the big cattle droves/musters of South Australia.I am yet to find out where he is buried, more than likely the Southern Cemetery in Dunedin, however, I have not been able to find any cemetery records relating to his burial.
Sarah Sutton (née Taylor) was the sister of Sir Henry Taylor of Leicester, I know little of that family as yet.
