Whilst my grand-father 'Francis Bernard (FRANK) Hussey' was born in Walthamstow, London, he always maintained he was Irish as his parents and his siblings were born in Co Cork.  I don't know much of the Hussey Family,  Grandad was the only direct member of the family to leave England and move downunder - whether by design or just as part of his life as a Seaman roving the Earth until meeting and marrying my grandmother - Ellen O'Keeffe, but regrettably, he spoke little of his family and upbringing.

I remember him as a very small and slim character, but very tough both physically and mentally.  He came from a family of sea-dogs, many of his brothers were seaman or in the Navy, his father was a Wharfinger in London.

The last ship Grandad worked one was the near new and ill-fated inter-island ferry 'Wahine' which got caught up in a cyclone and sank in the entrance to Wellington Harbour on 10th April 1968, just minutes from a safe berth in Wellington -killing 51 people out of the total of 735. While Grandad managed to survive this (he couldn't even swim) the effects of the cold and hours in the freezing water eventually caught up with him and he died a year later
