Our Casey Line of Pioneers starts with the arrival of
Daniel Casey in Australia in 4/4/1839 onboard the "Orient". Travelling
with him was wife Ann (née Franklin) and 8-month-old son Bartholomew.
Daniel , as many other pioneers seemed to do, turned his hand to many tasks, he
worked at Farming, Gold digging and was also shown as a Shepard. I do not have
any information on their early years in Australia, but the family seemed to be
mainly centred around Mogo, Moruya and Bateman's Bay by the 1850s.
Tragedy struck the
family in the form of one of Australia's oldest and strangest mysteries when
Daniel accompanied a group of four men on an exploration and strangely
disappeared without trace, despite all sorts of investigations, this weird
puzzle known as 'The Bermagui Mystery' has never been resolved. The head of this
expedition was Lamont Young, a NSW Mines surveyor, charged with the task of
finding possible new goldfields in the Bermagui area, the small boat the five
were travelling was found empty of the men and washed up at Bermagui on 10th
October 1880 with still no answers even now!
